Seven Springs

The Seven Springs area is easy enough to find -- simply take Cave Creek road northeast until it ends.  Once the pavement turns to dirt, you'll be on the road to Seven Springs campground.  The area offers a quick getaway for riders who want to spend a few hours in the higher desert elevations.  The well-graded road itself is part of the Great Western Trail. It's fast, dusty and relatively smooth, but allows access to some fun side trails.  For the ideal picnic, head up to the top of Humboldt Mountain, where a gigantic spherical radio tower looms overhead.  From this peak, you'll enjoy a great 360-degree view of the area and some slightly cooler temperatures.

While most of the side trails dead end rather quickly, there are a few gems that make for some good riding. Or you can stay on the main road until it runs into Bloody Basin road.  If you hand a right there, you'll eventually run into the Verde river and a great opportunity to cool off in a riverbed that actually has water in it (what a concept).
